Climate graphs

I think I've lost track of which class has done these, and which hasn't... so I'm just going to post the information online:

The following diagram (click on it to make it bigger) is a table of information about weather for Sydney in 2009 (at least I think it's 2009)...

What you need to do with it:

  1. Distill the information down to the MAIN points (i.e. min/max temp and rainfall
  2. Draw a SINGLE graph of that information

Whilst you can do SOME of it in Excel, I hope that you realise that you won't be able to do all of it via Excel, as climate graphs require TWO Y-axes...

Ways around it:

  1. Draw the entire graph by hand
  2. Draw two SEPARATE graphs in Excel and then photoshop the two graphs together
  3. Draw two separate graphs and print them together and hope and pray that they align with each other.

You will need to put a picture of this graph on your blog and it counts for some marks towards your next blog submission.

The main points of doing this are:

  1. More graphing exercise so that you are comfortable with graphs
  2. You are able to work out what information is not required when you collect all your data
  3. You can post pictures on your blog.

I hope that is enough information!

Yay! Holidays! Boo! Science work!

Hey guys!

Hope the first few days of the holidays has been filled with no work and lots of vegetating!

Now, let's get to work (hey, if I'm working, you have to!)...

First things first.

The first blog submission was, overall, very well done. For the most part, you are all doing what I would have expected you to do. I've included, with this post, a few blogs which were outstanding. I'm fairly sure I have asked the blog owners' permission to post these, but if you own one of these blogs and I have mistakenly posted it without your permission, just let me know and I can take it down!

Sahani's blog on rusting of different matrials based on what we throw down a drain...

Lisa's blog on shapes of paper planes and how flight times and lengths are affected...

Sylvia's blog... on... I'm not quite sure what yet... but something about the decay of food...

Mary's blog about paper planes...

Rachel's blog about alleotrophism in sweet potatoes...

Secondly...

You will receive an email (or you may have already received an email) with a very brief permission note to use for human-based experiments. Remember that you will need to consider safety aspects of your experiment, so make sure that there are no medical conditions which your participants have... (that was really bad grammar wasn't it?)

Thirdly...

You need to post your climate graphs onto your blogs now! Some people already have and they're looking really really nice. They just need to be on before the next blog submission. The reason why they are on your blogs is so that you will be familiar with posting pictures on your blogs... which will be essential for the end submission!

If you have missed out on the climate graph in class, make sure to comment here or send me an email! :D

Fourthly...

Some people STILL have not looked at an appropriate project to do... the people who are doing well should have already started on their approved projects in the holidays!!!

If you are one of these people who have not been approved or you don't know, you need to make sure you get in contact with me and that you GET A MOVE ON it!

Phew! That is all... Happy holidays!

Blogging

An email has gone out about what I am expecting for the blog submission on the 11th of March.

There has also been a project ideas document sent out with that email, so it is STRONGLY advised that you check that!

Current status...

Where you should be up to so far:
  1. Have done some research into which topic you'd like to do.
  2. Looked at some methods of how to perhaps do certain experiments.

If you haven't done this, hop to it!

Also, there are posters from last year's Year 10 students in L5 for you to have a look at. They will be thrown out at the end of MONDAY this coming week (1st March). You can have a look at them for inspiration.

The best posters from last year will be displayed in the library in a few days as well.

Referencing and citations

In class this week (Week 5), we will look at referencing and how to do referencing. There are powerpoints and a PDF which you will need to obtain from the school's intranet. It can be found in your Year 10 folders, in Science, Ms Zhang.

The PDF is called "APA" and the slideshow is called "Introduction to referencing and plagarism".

Please make sure you have these files for class!

There will be an update later this week about "following" and where you should be.

A lot of people have already posted on their blogs. I'm impressed by the level of work- just keep working at it! :D

Time stamping

Hopefully you should have all received an email from me to your DET emails about this blog so that you can keep up to date with information which I need to communicate to you that I won't do in class.

If you do not receive the email, please let me know or get a friend to forward them onto your personal emails.

I am still waiting for a few people to give me links to your blogs. If I receive no word by MONDAY next week (22nd Feb) I will post these names online and it will be a "name and shame"!!

The thing I want to talk about today is time stamping.

Time stamping
Time stamping lets people who are reading know when it is you have posted the blog. The time stamps on my blog are outlined in red in the picture below.

You need to make sure that your time stamps are AUSTRALIAN times, and in the correct time zone. I believe the default is USA Eastern Time... and as much as I would like to be in NY or Miami, we're not.

To change your time stamp, you need to head into "DASHBOARD". This can be found on the TOP tool bar after you have signed in. This is also your "home" page when you have signed into the Blogger site.

On the picture to the left, my profile is shown. The arrow points to the "settings", which you will need to click.

When you go into settings, click to the "Formatting" tab (just below the settings tab) and you will get to a lot of different formats.

Feel free to play around with these... but the one you need to change is the Timezone. Australia is +10 GMT!

Hope that works! Let me know if it doesn't!
